Singer BRITNEY SPEARS has been voted the greatest gay icon of all time in a new poll.
The Toxic hitmaker saw off competition from U.S. President Barack Obama and veteran performer Cher to take 31 per cent of the vote in the Orange County Equality Project's poll to find the quintessential gay icon.
Spears' idol Madonna came second with 25 per cent of the vote, but a poll spokesperson insists it was a close call between the two superstars.
The Equality Project's Joel Waddell says, "When Madonna puts out a new album, she will be on top again. Madonna is the greatest icon the gay community has ever had."
Lady Gaga was voted in third with 22 per cent, while 12 per cent of respondents picked Katy Perry.
Oh wow. Well I definitely always saw Britney as one of the main ones, even though she isn't as involved with her gay fans as Cher and Madonna. But I think it's great that someone can be considered THE ultimate gay icon without making their entire life/career about gays.
A survey from Orange County’s Equality Project asked 1,000 gay men all over Southern California who is the greatest Gay icon. Britney Spears won the poll with 31 percent of the vote. “Britney Spears is a genuine Gay icon, says Equality Project’s Joel Waddell. She is genuine in her affection for us and doesn’t need to exploit us as a marketing tool like some other current Madonna-like icon."
Speaking of Madonna, she came in second with 25 percent of the vote. “When Madonna puts out a new album, she will be on top again. Madonna is the greatest icon the Gay community has ever had,” says Mr. Waddell. He isn’t happy with the fact Lady Gaga came in third with 22 percent of the vote.
“Lady Gaga is a talentless scam artist. She is to the Gay community what Hitler was to Germany—completely destructive. He is a little bit more enthusiastic about Katy Perry, who earned 12 percent of the vote. Other names mentioned include Perez Hilton, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Cher.

This is ridiculous. Britney is not a real gay icon. She is a pop icon, and gays love pop. The only people who should be in these lists are Madonna, Kylie, and Cher. Maybe Bette Midler.

Kylie is not well known in the US and Cher was a truly gay icon back in the 90's but no one is checking for her atm and I think this poll was made by young people
