2010's Euro-R&B Trend


Maybe it was Gaga, or maybe it was auto-tune, but 2010 was the year that R&B turned into European dance music. Pairing soulful vocals over the electro/techno beats, a new experimental genre of music was created, baffling more than a few true R&B fans.

Although it felt like a weird marriage of two different genres, we witnessed artist after artist dabbling in the hybrid. For some, like Usher and Akon, embracing the Euro-R&Pop vibe worked out well, and for other artists following the trend — not so much.

Here are seven artists and songs who jumped on the Euro-dance inspired musical bandwagon in 2010.

Only Girl and DJGUFIL are straight POP/Dance to ME personally when I hear them...and I have no idea of The Way You Love Me...but I guess its something "different"

Rihanna was never R&B to begin with.

I think it's a great development. And with most songs, I could not even say, wether it is Pop, Dance or RnB. It's just a whole new kind of genre.

Rihanna has never been R&B

and Commander by Kelly Rowland is AMAZING. It's a shame it flopped.

Essence fails.

For me, only girl is kinda House and not RnB

If rihanna only made RnB songs, she wouldnt be very versatile (i think so)

Why diss Essence? It's true isn't it. Kelly lost her R&B roots and transformed her sound completely. So did Kelis. Essence always cherished true R&B, something that is so rare today. Stupid 2010.

What really grinds my gears are the R&B artists who're actually making traditional R&B music, yet are over-looked by, for instance, Essence magazine. R&B is actually having a resurgence in popularity a la Jazmine, Fantasia, Monica, Trey, but we only hear about the the "R&B" that's switched to Euro-Pop or dance-Pop, or just Pop in general SMH.

Note to Essence: So you can run and tell dat, run and tell dat, run and tell dat homeboy home home homeboy.

How are they ignorant? This is the year where nearly EVERY R&B artist jumped on the generic dance-pop bandwagon. But R&B artists have been doing it for the past few years.

Bullsh*t. There is a FINE line between R&B and Pop music. Rihanna was never an R&B aritst, but they always nominate her for that award beacuse she's BLACK.

Can't a black bitch get recognized for any other genre of music? It's as if they ALWAYS expect Black people to be either Hip-Hop or R&B.

Is the person who wrote this list retarded? They lost me when they decided to diss "Commander." But then they actually wrote that they didn't understand the title of "Acapella." Did they even listen to the ****ing song? To top of all the ********, they ended things by labeling "Check It Out" a miss. Uh, no.

Your interpretation of what is true R&B is deceitful Duca. Her first album is not R&B, her 2nd album is not R&B, her 3rd album is not R&B, rated R is the closest she got to a contemporary R&B album. You live in Europe so of course your interpretation of what is R&B is flawed. Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Jazmine Sullivan, Monica, Fantasia, Robin Thicke, THAT IS R&B.
