There seems to be 2 questions/points. When did the genre take over? When did R/B artists first start to dabble in this genre. For the first question, Gaga and BEP are probably the forerunners among others. As far as R/B I'm sure there are better and more significant examples of R/B artists dabbling in "poppish" sounding records. But in 2008 both Neyo and CB had success with R/B-pop. In late 2009, while Usher was still on Papers and Hey Daddy Neyo had a flopped (in U.S. anyway) Beautiful Monster and CB had pop/house album cuts. Beyonce had Sweet Dreams around the same time. Usher came out at the right time and ran with it. CB and others followed up.

Honestly, I think it's just a cultural shift too. Kids who may have traditionally listened to R/B and rap know Gaga and Katy Perry and Coldplay. My local pop station played a version of "No Hands" yesterday with a sped up house/pop/techno beat. Attempting to define genres is getting stickier and it seems ridiculous to me to expect artists not to experiment and try new things.

Please. Usher jumped on the bandwagon because his album wasn't doing well.

I would definitely point out Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music", but I honestly believe everyone jumped on the pop/dance route after Lady GaGa emerged on the scene. She is definitely not the first artist to perform a pop/dance song, but a lot of them seemed to pop up after she debuted.

I mean, just think about how many artist's (including Usher) who suddenly began working with RedOne after GaGa debuted?

(Just an FYI, I'm not a GaGa stan. I like her music, but yeah, don't really care that much about her)

Let me tell you something about Usher & RvR that a lot of people dont know:

-Usher litterally FOUGHT with his label in order TO PUT OMG ON HIS ALBUM.And the song was actually RECORDED IN 2009...and his album wasnt even released so the "Usher jumped on the bandwagon because his album wasn't doing well." dont work honey
-And FYI you cant imagine how much songs Usher recorded with RedOne. They are not on the album because the label was scared of narrow minded people.And they were wrong since Usher is the Billboard Hot 100 male artist of the year.

Your argument doesn't disprove what I said.

The label may not have forced him to place "OMG" in order to boost sales, but Usher as a commercial artist may have wanted to in order to have his album sell (which was a good decision as no one remembers anything from his album aside from "OMG"). The label may not have forced him, but Usher being a business man probably knew his album didn't have any major hits.

So again, your point doesn't disprove what I said, which was Usher did NOT start the dance trend.


OK...but again, would he have worked with RedOne if GaGa had not come onto the scene with him as her producer? That's what we're disputing here.

This are the actual facts : Usher admires will i am as a producer and even worked with him on HIS and ask him in 2009 to make a "crossover" song and they recorded OMG.Usher was really proud of this song and FORCED his label to put it on the album.And BTW OMG wasnt available until the release of the album.

Yes, "OMG" was on the album and wasn't released until after the album came out but Usher could have fought his label to place it on the album because he may have realized it lacked any substantial hits (which it did). Look at his album, which single has done well with the exception of "OMG" in the Top 40 charts? Re-release doesn't count.

That's completely accurate. Congrats to him for pulling that off, but he didn't have any hits on the album with the exception of "OMG". But I believe "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love", "Hot Toddie" and now "More" are probably a good chunk as to why he's named the artist of the year. All of them are great songs, but not on the original version of the album (with the exception of "More", but the version being serviced to radio isn't on either of his albums). His re-release had hits, not the original album.

Essence is stupid...they'd rather tear down artists who are black(cause they arent R&B), who drift off into dance music because black people are too cheap to buy the music they love to listen to THAN compliment these artists on changing up their style and being to adapt to the musical climate OR compliment the MANY artists like Jazmine Sullivan, Chrisette Michelle, Monica, Trey Songz and Tank who are making Traditional and Contemporary R&B...

Kelly Rowland, Rihanna & Kelis have never been truly embraced by the black community, Rihanna was only embraced after Rated R and Kelly and Kelis are much more embraced in the UK where dance is huge...
