A man who refused a body scan and pat-down search at a California airport has become an Internet sensation in the debate weighing fliers’ security versus their privacy.
John Tyner posted a cellphone audio recording of his half-hour encounter Saturday at Lindbergh Field in San Diego.
The software engineer couldn’t board a flight after refusing a full-body scan that reveals an image of what’s under his clothes. He also wouldn’t allow a Transportation Security Administration worker to conduct a groin check. Tyner tells the worker, “If you touch my junk, I’m gonna have you arrested.”
Tbh I don't understand what the big deal is, I'm not a fan at all of naked scanners but I'd much rather be frisked than die on an airplane... but it seems like most people are very protective of their rights in this issue.
If people don't want to go througth the scanners they shouldn't fly, no one is forcing them to. I'd much rather be safe and have the scanners than the alternative.
Airport security has been a failure ever since they started using Lady Gaga and Katy Perry songs in their safety demos.
I wouldn't call it a failure since more people are taking notice of the demonstrations of safety precautions than ever after incorporating entertainment to their presentation.
You know what you are getting into. If you don't want to comply, don't fly. Very simple.
He should have picked out a hot female security officer and asked her to do it. Honestly that is all they need to do at airports. They should have all hot girls (and guys) and you choose which one you want to frisk you. Honestly, people would fly all the time if they knew that was the case. You keep the security while giving customers a little something "extra".
My main problem with the full-body scanners is that it's only a false sense of security, and I see some of you buying into it. Do any of you really believe this lobbyist-funded corporate scam is the thing that will keep us safe from terrorism?
Your choice, do you want to have TSA agents keep images of your naked body, or do you want to be sexually assaulted? Give me a ****ing break. This isn't security; this is the gratuitous manipulation of people who don't know any better. What's the end result? No one is actually more secure, they're just more afraid. Stephen Colbert's dream come true.
Once again, we're being "protected" from our own rights. It's like the Patriot Act all over again. Very disappointing.
It's also really easy to say "well, just don't fly," but that's easier said than done for a lot of people who already have previous family or business commitments. They shouldn't have to give up their right to privacy just because they need to travel.
Y'all are so ****ing gullible, good lord. This **** is absolutely pointless. Death at people thinking this is gonna help in preventing any acts of terrorism.
It's just perverted and a total invasion of privacy. The actual confrontation between Tyner and the TSA Agent explains it all:
Quote:
TSA Agent: "We are going to be doing a groin check. That means I'm going to place my hand on your hip, my other hand on your inner thigh, slowly go up and slide down."
Tyner: "If you touch my junk I'm going to have you arrested."
A supervisor warned him his only other option was not to fly.
Tyner: "I don't understand how a sexual assault could be made a condition of my flying."
Supervisor: "This is not considered a sexual assault."
Tyner: "It would be if you weren't the government."
TSA Agent: "By buying a ticket you gave up a lot of your rights
I don't mind security guards touching me but I understand how some people would find it uncomfortable or violating of their rights. People in the US are really paranoid to be honest, and these types of scans aren't really worthy and aren't as useful as some of you may think. I agree with TC on what he said..
