ATRL, what were your experiences with wisdom teeth extraction? I'm probably going to have to get mine taken out eventually, and I was wondering if local anesthesia (only numbing, still awake/fully conscious) or if the IV sedation was better for you. I gag extremely easily, and I heard that the sound of your teeth being broken apart is unnerving, but I also don't want to be so strung out on the anesthesia/laughing gas that I say something inappropriate, sexual, or out myself

Please tell me what you recommend and what the circumstances were

i was administered anesthesia via an IV
i couldnt feel anything pain and i couldnt make out anyone in the room, i just saw grey blobs and felt like i was floating

Once the surgery was done, i was nauseous for the first 20 minutes after, i also threw up in a trash can
One the ride home, i was in pain. Not extreme pain but my mouth hurt alot and i was sleepy

I had to get a prescription for Vicodin because the medication i was originally prescribed didnt work
waiting on my mom to get back with the Vicodin was the most agonizing thing because the pain had truly set in and my mouth hurt to the point where i was repeatedly punching a wall to shift the pain somewhere else

the Vicodin made me nauseous so i was bed ridden for the first couple days because i would throw up if i move
i think it took a week for all the stitches in my mouth to fall out (i had stitches that came out automatically as my mouth healed)

so yeah 10 out of 10 would not recommend

Once you get numbed, you'll be fine.

I had to get my lower wisdom teeth yanked out, and I don't have the top ones. I had the IV thing in my arm that made me really woozy and out of it - and that was fine, the whole thing was a hazy blur. And that, plus injections in my mouth to numb the pain, pretty much made for a fine experience. I was just real out of it for like an hour after but then more or less fine, and just had to go take it real easy for a few days. I don't think you'd say anything you don't want to.

So they basically told me that I would be put under general anesthesia which is the whole IV/tubes in your nose type deal in order to break my bottom teeth in half and then extract it in two pieces (I got all four out). When he put the IV in my arm I was so shook my heartbeat was going extremely fast on the heart monitor I fell asleep immediately. It seemed like 30 seconds had passed and I woke up kind of dazed. I'm used to being high (stoner) so when I had woken up I didn't feel loopy or anything, asked the assistant if everything went well. They pulled out a wheelchair for me to take back to the car that was waiting for me but I walked. I didn't have any days where it hurt extremely bad, but make sure you're always icing the first 48 hours. I put two bags of ice on my cheeks and wrapped it in ACE bandage which really helped. They prescribed me hydrocodone which made so nauseous, if you get stomach aches easily ask for something else. I also washed my mouth after every meal with saltwater for the next two weeks because theres going to be big ass holes in the back of your mouth. I used a syringe to flush the holes out with the saltwater solution. It wasn't so bad and after two days I was eating Wingstop so it didn't really have an impact on me. You'll be fine

I got mine out just this week, actually. Went under, and I barely felt the IV go in because I was hopped up on nitrous oxide. It hardly felt like I was out for long, and I got all 4 out at the same time. As for recovery, the meds and ice and stuff aren't even that bad, after the first day it's basically nothing (at least it is for me)

Buy ice bandanges/ice packs and keep them on the side you had done for the first 12 hours and you'll be fine.

ATRL helped me through my wisdom teeth extraction in 2011 too.

Drink lots of pineapple juice. It has a natural anti-inflammatory in it.

It really wasn't a big deal - the surgery was fine, I went home and all I had to do was eat soft foods, rinse my mouth out and take pain killers, and I think like a week later I was pretty much back to normal.

Here's the whole experience, Me Style

I was given local anesthesia and nitrous oxide and I had the time of my life I remember the entire experience and because mine were fully impacted, it was very quick, absolutely painless, and they encourage you to blast music on your headphones.

The recovery was the part that sucked for me, personally. I didn't take any of the heavy pain medication after the first pill because it made me want to throw up - I haven't thrown up in nine years and I'm determined to keep that streak alive It was most painful the first day, and that's when you bleed the most. But what you see when you take out the gauze is basically 95 percent saliva, 5 percent blood. So don't freak out. After the first day I felt no pain whatsoever.

I was extremely cautious because I didn't want to get dry socket. I was also lucky because my job basically gave me a week off to recuperate and everyone was incredibly cool about it, so I was able to relax and not do anything that might risk upsetting the recovery. But it can be very boring (I was counting the hours until I was more or less 'in the clear' with regards to anything bad happening) and you get tired of the soft foods quickly. So it's important to keep things varied. Some kind of flavored mashed potatoes would be great if you want something savory rather than sweet. I still tried to just swallow things quickly though, because you don't want food getting into the sockets during the healing process. Little tortellini noodles are also a great choice because they're filling but you can swallow them (and their contents) without having to chew through them and have more little bits of food all over the place.

Make sure to very gently rinse your mouth with salt water after every meal. The salt will free up any bits of food still in your mouth or in those sockets, and it'll keep bacteria from getting comfortable. But don't do anything that'll cause suction in your mouth, because then you risk dry socket and you're going to Hell Just roll your head around for a few minutes to make sure the salt water gets everywhere, and let the water fall out of your mouth, don't spit it out. After a week or so, if they use suture that dissolves, some of that may come out when you rinse your mouth.

It is.... the BEST weight loss program you will ever undergo I lost 15 pounds as a result of that experience and never looked back.

Did you know/could you control what you were saying afterwards?

After I was woken up, I was basically 100% sober/conscious, just groggy feeling. So yeah.

Okay, that makes me feel better since all I see are these messy videos of people saying things that they would never normally say, like that girl that kept chanting "big black c*ck" thank you

I think that happens when they only give you partial sedation/loopy drugs and they keep you awake If they knock you out you'll be fine.

I had to get 3 extractions and it wasn't painful at all. I could feel them twisting the tooth which was kind of a weird feeling but again, I didn't experience any pain. There was a lot of bleeding though and I remember when I got home I went straight to bed without changing the gauze in my mouth so nothing was absorbing the blood and my entire pillow was bloody lol

I don't remember falling asleep

I don't even remember what I did after, just that a called my dad a little bitch and I wouldn't stop singing along to Bloody Mary

All 4 of mine have come through The bottom 2 got infected a little bit and I needed antibiotics but I think I'm safe now
