What makes them so musically superior?

Tove Lo is incredibly bland and uninspired actually and Melanie Martinez is arguably THE most derivative act ive seen rise from this mess of an "alt pop" wave yet.

Lorde's album was a breath of fresh air and as much as I think shes overrated I do think Lana was at least aesthetically on point and mature. But all these other girls are just riding the wave that the other 2 propelled and they're getting away with being as empty and generic as any of the major pop girls. But because they're not on top 40 radio or at least not a stadium filling act they're deemed better than. Glory was a pretty sh*tty album but its hands down more exciting than Lady Wood and its minimal rnb/boozy melancholic cliches.

Marina & the Diamonds and Sky Ferreira are talented alt pop/rock girls, these girlies in the OP could never! (even tho kween Tove Lo has few great songs, Lady Wood is an awful album compared to QOTQ)

What's alternative about Lady Wood?

I'd like someone to explain how Tove is "alt." I mean, if Lady Wood is alt then so is Revival.

even tho in the 00's it was kinda dead and the only "alt. pop acts" were considered talentless models who were trying to make music

in the 80's and especially 90's you had a lot of alternative pop, and especially rock and folk girls, few of which went mainstream (Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Alanis Morrisette, No Doubt, Sixpence None Richer, Natalie Imbruglia, The Cardigans, The Cranberries, etc. etc.)

Tove Lo came up as an alternative act. What people don't realize is that she'd been around for awhile, I first heard Habits back in either 2012 or early 2013. Back then it had an entirely different music video but its production was generally the same. She wasn't just a pop act, she had crossover appeal clearly, but her subject matter and approach aren't entirely Revival-comparable. ALTHOUGH, I certainly agree with you in the sense that Lady Wood is definitely not any more substantial than a release like Revival. They follow similar aesthetic guidelines. But thats also because major pop acts like Selena, etc have all adopted the sound of alt-pop and rnb.

Who said anything about alt pop being a new concept? I certainly didn't. But theres this wave, as I stated, of emerging alt-pop acts with a very specific racy and minimal slightly rnb influenced aesthetic. Rising from the depths of soundcloud and tumblr and fueled by fanbases consisting of basic pop stans that want basic palatable music but dont want to seem as basic as those that listen to everything constantly replayed on top 40 radio stations. So they resort to the likes of Lana, Marina, Tove, Melanie, etc. I just think Lorde was the only one to really breakthrough to major airplay.
