This year, many stores that are chains are opening their doors early on Thanksgiving to give out holiday deals. HOWEVER, this negatively impacts the employees that work at these stores. The stores claim that most employees that work on thanksgiving are volunteers. This simply is not true.

Considering how many people shop during thanksgiving/Black Friday, the store needs more employees. Many employees have resisted and raised concern but the stores don't hear them. Instead they open the stores earlier and earlier every year causing the employees to spend LESS time with their families.


Why are stores opening earlier? Because the companies are desperate for customers and there appears to be a demand.

I implore you, boycott going to stores on Thanksgiving day so that retail workers can spend time with their families instead of dealing with crazy and rude customers.
Wait until midnight, when Black Friday starts


I am refusing to ever return to the following stores because the are stamping out and ruining thanksgiving for many families

Macy's
kohls
JC Penny
Sears

Americans are rabid animals when it comes to consumption. My dad works for a department store and last few years has to leave at 5 pm on Thanksgiving to go to work. It's really unfortunate.

Okay, and my mom is a doctor and has had to work every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day for as long as I can remember.
Sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do i.e. working on holidays.
We always accommodate by celebrating a day early or a day later.

This will never work. People don't care about the people who have to work at 5pm, that's what "they signed up for". LOL the people that go out on thanksgiving are losers, it should be back to normal. You know black FRIDAY.

Buying a pair of uggs on thanksgiving is not the same thing as having an accident and having to go to the emergency room. Doctors have always had to work around the clock on all days

The difference is your mom and the people who chose to work those jobs knew what they were getting into. And I would assume Is paid well. And is actually doing something meaningful... you know not dealing with rude ass customers who are buying a $20 sweatshirt you can get for the same price any other day. It's just not worth it. Black Friday isn't Black Thursday evening...

You could make the argument my mom signed up for it. But if you started working retail the last 5 years, you can make an argument that you signed up for it too. I have absolutely no sympathy. Celebrate on a different day then, like everyone else whose family members have jobs that force them to work holidays.

You're missing the point. Medical care is emergency based and can't be replaced or delayed. Shopping is a leisurely activity that can be postponed. that's why people should voluntarily wait 7 hours until Black Friday begins

You're missing the point too. The point that life is unfair and sometimes you have to be an adult and do something you don't want to do.

By no means am I equating the significance of medical care and retail. I'm simply making a point that they're both jobs and sometimes having a job you have to work shifts you would rather not work.

That's an interesting point, advocating employees to do things that are harmful to themselves and their families all because of a dire need to shop and because it's "just part of being adult" when it didn't even exist 5 years ago. It's true, life isn't fair, but that mostly applies to circumstances that people can't change. We have an opportunity to make it fair

Companies are taking advantage of their employees all for greed. We as consumers need to send a strong message that we will not start shopping until Black Friday

It's not going to change in the near future. People are greedy, and people will always want to shop those deals. You just have to accept it and move on.

Sorry I don't share your fatalistic views about the world. These companies are facing huge backlash not only by consumers but by other companies too.

It's extremely realistic that shopping on thanksgiving will end in a few years.

I haven't shopped during Thanksgiving weekend for years. The deals are not usually for things I truly want and it's all to get people to buy excess material goods they wouldn't have got otherwise.

Thankfully, it's on the decline and stores will realize it sooner or later.

i'm not even in the mood to celebrate Thankstaking Day let alone spend my money on decently priced items
