how would you explain to someone, such as a kid, why saying colored is offensive?
There is a history behind the word riddled with racist connotations. It was used primarily by racist white people during segregation and you could say it was the 'polite' way of saying the N word.

I just say black people, or whatever race they are
When white people use POC and colored people it just sounds like they're trying too hard to be correct and not racist. It's the new "African American," where people are afraid of describing someone as black for some reason, so they say African American because it has a more positive connotation and people are scared of being interpreted as a racist. It's kinda sad because there's nothing wrong with saying black.

I prefer Black honestly. POC sounds like it's trying too hard to cover up the racism and Colored is just not appropriate at all to use when referring to black people given the history.
