POC is not offensive. It's used by those who want to either be politically correct or inclusive or other races/ethnicities who don't fit into the white standard.
"Colored" in the U.S. has an antiquated connotation in the U.S. with a history of violence, oppression, and segregation (the period when whites were using it most in order to emphasize certain laws and rules) attached to its usage. It is somewhat similar to using "Negro".
I prefer Black honestly. POC sounds like it's trying too hard to cover up the racism and Colored is just not appropriate at all to use when referring to black people given the history.
This! Also I feel bad using POC cause it's an acronym for another phrase as well which is not good
well in my country calling someone ''negro'' is not an insult, no one gets offended by being called ''colored'' or whatever BUT I am a white latino so I am gonna pass on that question
Yeah. I mean, 'colored' was the word that was used throughout the US during segregation. 'People of color' isn't necessarily offensive. It's just people tend to not understand that there are divisions of those groups.
When I hear someone still use the term "colored people," it's generally an indication to me that the said person probably hasn't spent much time around people of color specifically black people. I don't think it's inherently racist, but it's certainly indicates a degree of ignorance or lack of sensitivity. Stateside, "colored people" has a loaded meaning from the Jim Crow days.
"People of color" is fine for generally referring to non-white people of various races and ethnicities.
