I have a flatmate here from Virginia at the moment and she's amazed that we don't use pumpkin at all aside from roasting it with other vegetables and making it into a soup. She made pumpkin pancakes the other day and they tasted soooooo good!
But yeah, I'd say it's a North American thing.
Also our pumpkins look different to your ones and she said they resemble more of a squash to her, which after googling makes sense as it says our pumpkins are variants of a winter squash.
I've never seen one of those orange-skin pumpkins in my life.
