Fad and gimmick.
It gained traction for A) Being Pokemón and B) Augmented reality but since the only purpose (so far) is catching pokemon and fighting at the gym, it quickly has died down after everyone got a hold of it.
It's still massive and slaying the App Store. It was always going to slow down, but it's still massive, especially amongst kids (the main demographic).

Well, people strted playing because of its similarities to the original game. However, one of the best things about pokemon is fighting and obviously for a game that was pushing "outisde world interaction" the fact you can't play against other people is kinda lame. Maybe after they get out of beta it will work better.
Those gym battles are lame as **** and you'll know it.

Fad implies that something never finds steady success (again, GO is still the #1 grossing app in the app store). It's still too early to really tell if GO will stabilize or keep fading but as of now, it's still very successful.
Just because something never repeaks doesn't mean it's a fad (see the main series Pokemon games), otherwise all our faves would be deemed fads.

I don't think this is the case, this was a world wide event, the problems you mentioned are exclusively targeted to some areas in the US.
I think that your case might apply for other situations but this one doesn't seem to connect.
