I'm not quite sure why Hollywood still whitewashes their films.

For people saying that films with white lead characters make more money or are more accessible, films like Avatar the Last Airbender, Aloha, the Prince of Persia, Pan, Gods of Egypt, etc. have all come under fire for whitewashing minority roles and all have flopped at the box office.

And there are times when I think whitewashing serves no purpose whatsoever. Why is Tilda Swinton playing the Tibetan born Ancient One necessary? It's not like people are going to go see a superhero film because Tilda Swinton is in it or that people won't go see the film because the actual character is in it.

It doesn't make sense to me. So why do they do it>

Why do people in Asian countries only use Asian actors?

It is the same reason why most people have friends within the same culture/background/origin

Oh my ****ing God. I hate to break it to you, but America isn't the land of white people. It's made up of a diverse set of races, cultures, and backgrounds. Asian countries making films representing their cultural makeup is different.

And Asian films cast non Asian actors all the time, too.

And, that argument has nothing to do with whitewashing. It's not like China is casting Asian people to play Hispanic people or white people. There's no such thing as yellow-washing Call me back again when you see like Tony Leung playing Abraham Lincoln or Ghandi or some **** like that.

Because those movies are aimed at an Asian audience. Also, Asian movies are usually not even in English so most non-Asian actors can't be casted by default.

Girl, please. Asian countries are 99% Asian. America, as we know, is a melting pot, and yet minorities are still cast aside for the majority of Hollywood roles. Add that to POC characters in source materials being portrayed in adaptations by white people and you can see what the problems and complaints are for. There's absolutely NO reason for it, other than sticking to the status quo to benefit Caucasian people.

Ummm because they aint a melting pot of different races,they are homogenous countries. Hollywood on the other hand comes from such a place.
Equally Asian countries, don't make Egyptian movies at all, only their histories. So they dont pretend, they were the builders of civilisations from other continents.

I think Tilda specifically was cast to avoid the controversy of casting a non-Tibetan versus a real Tibetan, both of which would have caused outrage in Asia (because casting a Tibetan would outrage China, which means no money, and casting a different ethnicity would make several other Asian countries mad, see Memoirs of a Geisha). They felt it was the easier sword to fall in by avoiding that controversy all together. But I guess we can judge them however we see fit.

Even then the fashion industry in asia is full of white (and half-white) models.

Western culture is a white culture. That's just how it is.

I think it's because they want the movies to reach a global audience and to be as relatable as possible.

I'm just going to assume you're in high school and don't know that much.

Because their markets for casting White Actors/Actress is huge. Not just in America, but there is Europe, Australia (all rich continents with plenty of people with spare money to see movies) then there is Central/South America and then Asia and Africa I assume too. They know their market and what makes them money. That is what they care about. Money.
