Following the short-lived Conservative Party leadership election, the United Kingdom now faces the prospect of a bitter challenge to Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour Party, the official opposition.

Angela Eagle, the former Shadow First Secretary of State, has already declared her candidature. She has lamented Corbyn as 'unelectable' and is presenting herself as a unifying candidate for her party. The schedule for the leadership challenge is to be announced, and Eagle will face considerable difficulty if she is to oust the incumbent, who is highly popular among grassroots members, and today was guaranteed a place on the ballot.

The challenge comes after an overwhelming majority of Labour MPs voted against Corbyn in a motion of no confidence, and the mass resignation of his cabinet following the EU referendum. These actions have been described as a 'coup' by Corbyn supporters, and were orchestrated to pressure the Labour leader into resigning. The possibility of a snap general election under Britain's new Prime Minister Theresa May, and also Corbyn's lacklustre performance in the referendum campaign, are cited by Labour rebels as the principal reasons why his leadership is untenable.
