Being gay to the citizens of Ghana means one of the following things; you were molested by someone at an early stage in life and have gotten use to it or it’s a bad character you picked up from a friend or my personal favorite you are possessed by an evil spirit. Most of the people in Ghana refuse to accept the fact that being gay isn’t a choice and there is a lot discrimination towards members of the LGBTQ community. The law in Ghana even makes being gay in Ghana illegal and it is punishable by 7 to 8 years in prison. This forces the LGBTQ community to live in the shadow or live false lives just so that they aren’t suspected of being gay. Generally Ghanaians do not speak of homosexuality because it is a taboo topic and anyone seen defending or simply talking about it is seen as gay and gets a taste of the stigmatization attributed towards gay people in Ghana. Every now and then the topic gets into the media because someone in the community is attacked or beaten nearly to death just for being who they are and daring to express themselves in public.

wrote this little in response to an interview i heard on radio because homosexuality has become a huge topic here in Ghana and the future isn't looking too bright.

Ugh, when my family went to Ghana, my sister went to a church and they were saying, 'homosexuality is wrong' and my sis walked STRAIGHT out. She was so disgusted and shocked. I would've done the same. When I was in the car, they were also selling these leaflets and it was about 'homosexuality being wrong' and I was so my thoughts are with the LGBT Ghanaian community. I hope for change someday

That's sad but this isn't news and it's not saying anything new!! Thanks to the abrahamic religions and colonialism ,Africa is a mess and very much backwards!!

It was actually so surprised when I learned that ancient African cultures were very open to homosexuality and some tribes actually believed men who were more feminine were in some ways Devine.

The answer isn't leaving a country, It's trying to make it better. In human history Europe only recently allowed gay rights. You can't expect the same from other countries instantly, especially when they are poorer which means they are more likely to rely on religion.

It would have suffered a lot and there would be more countries than there are right now but by now it would have found it's feet and would have been way way better off than what it is now!

Colonisation and imperialism really ****ed up Africa. It's no surprise why their attitude towards many things is set back by many DECADES. Should we also call the countries who colonised them 'trashy' ????
