"Natural hair" movement gains traction
Quote:
A movement in Alberta has women with curly hair saying, drop the relaxer and love your curls.
A meetup in Calgary on Sunday drew about 100.
"Before, when you were going into the corporate world, you had to have sleek, straight hair to just have that professional look," Thompson said.
She said though, that is all changing.
"We have good hair and it is time to start embracing our good hair and just letting our curls out and just doing what we do. My hair is so much better, I can wear it straight, I can wear it curly, I can wear it how I want to," Thompson explained.
"I am not just limited by one style."
"All my friends, whether they live in England, Canada, Jamaica, the States, they have all gone natural," she said.
But both agree there is a shortage of natural products and education in the province.
That's where the meetup organizer, Jemelah Nicks, comes in.
This is the second annual event for Nicks, who 'went natural' about four years ago.

The goal of hair keeping is to make it as healthy as possible. I'm glad that black women aren't chemically treating their hair anymore. It's beautiful as is.

Yea... have you seen Gaga or Nicki's hairline recently? The wigs, chemical treatments, extensions, etc were slowly balding them. I assume that's why both artists are going natural at the moment.

I don't see how wigs can affect your hair line

This shouldn't be a movement. It should be a normal thing. Mainstream media has such a bad influence on the world, it's disturbing me.
To all the humans out there, BE YOURSELF and **** whoever doesn't like it.

As a guy with curly hair , I get tons of compliments from women and men too, I don't know why girls are always ashamed of their curls. One of my old bosses is Puerto Rican, and she would always relax and bleach her hair which in the end always looked like an old hay broom. Her curls were gorgeous, but of course she married into a white family, where kinky hair is not seen as beautiful. I felt bad for her but at the same time I didn't because she's chose not to love who she was in then end.

exactly, I wish popstars like Beyonce and Rihanna would do it too, they are a huge part of this wig craze that needs end tbh. Rihanna had it natural for a short while, she should go back to that tbh

Wigs are not the problem. It's a style, if a woman wants to wear a wig, she should. The problem is women being forced to think that their natural hair is not 'pretty' enough, which makes them use wigs.

Or they can do whatever they want with their hair as its THEIR hair, BTW many African cultures actually wear hair enhancements/pieces, it's been practice for centuries by Black women. Hair is very important and the way a woman chooses to wear hers is entirely up to her.
Now I love natural hair on a woman, but if she can look just as good in a weave or wits relaxer then I'm not hating.

Alot of yall don't know how complicated natural hair care can be
Black hair often suffers from shrinkage. And during the colder months can also experience alot of stiffness and breakage.
Box braids and weaves etc. Are protective styles in that they shield the natural hair from the "elements"

Nothing wrong with "sleek, straight hair", nothing wrong with curly hair either. Do whatever you want
