The Dutch founded the city there, but it was called New Amsterdam.
When it was renamed to New York and the city was ruled from London, that was what made it an iconic city.
London is just more global and impactful. Y'all wouldn't even have subways to get around your "capital of the world" if they hadn't been invented in London.
