And it's not only the Romance languages (I think that's what you meant by "Renaissance") that have genders. In German we have der (m), die (f), and das (for neutral). When people learn German they find that these pronouns are not even logical (for example, a young lady is "das" and a dog is der, but a cat is die, irrespective of their gender, and many more examples).
In a way, having these distinctions is what makes many languages quite beautiful. I cannot imagine Spanish the neutral "lo" or French without gender distinctions.
