The specific storyline in question was literally about a white-passing woman trying to hide her Native American roots. Obviously a white actress was gonna be playing the part.

I've even seen Native American people point out that the story
would not work if the woman was played by a Native American since, obviously, she'd have the experiences of a Native American woman (due to her skin color) and not a white woman (what the story called for her to have)
