I don't believe in cultural appropriation when it comes to artists taking things from certain cultures for a music video/performance theme because I believe in artistic freedom. but as a POC I do not like seeing white people dressing as a POC as a costume unless the culture is like dead (Ancient Egypt etc). Black face is never okay as well its plain ugly.

On-topic, I do see where the whole "it's a culture, not a costume" argument is coming from. If someone asks what your costume is, you shouldn't just be able to say, "I'm an Indian," or, "I'm an Arab" or anything like that. If you're just dressing up as a caricature of someone else's ethnicity, then yeah, that's not okay.

It only exists on tumblr. I'd find it really cool and honoring if someone not from my culture dressed up in a folk costume from there.

I think in general it's an overplayed card, since we live in a melting pot society and appropriating ideas, perspectives, and artifacts keeps us fresh.

But there are lines that shouldn't be crossed for ***** and giggles. If you're dressing up as a character I think it's a okay. But if you're gonna go as a cultural figure outside of your cultural sphere, it can be insensitive and stereotypical. So like Native American costumes on Halloween cause you wanna be a "typical Indian" is characterizing a complex group of people based on a stereotype. As well as well misusing their sacred cultural artifacts for your entertainment.

If you wanna go as Aladdin though, you don't have to be middle eastern. If you're white and wanna go as a black rapper, you can indicate through dress without painting yourself black.

Long story short, there are tasteful ways to approach it.

No cause its not a real thing. Anybody can dress up as anyone/anything they want, that's the fun of Halloween
