The fact that people think Kanye is what "made her famous" or what made her a household name, is stupid. That being said, the incident did make her even bigger. I really hate these kinds of threads where the success of female artists is credited with the reckless actions of some dumb man (for obvious reasons). Country artists are usually paid dust by the VMA's. Taylor was not only nominated in a major category; she WON! You don't win a major VMA award if you are not a household name. To hear some of you tell it, MTV only nominated her because they knew Kanye was gonna bum rush the stage and act a fool.

I don't see why people get so deeply offended at the idea of a controversy greatly increasing someone's celebrity profile. You can easily say that Kanye's "George Bush doesn't care about Black people" comment is what made him a household name in spite of him having a sizable career prior to that as well. Sales alone isn't what creates massive stardom in many cases. To say that she wasn't really a household name prior to that isn't saying she didn't have a career. You can sell a lot catering to specific demographics and still not be known on a widespread level.

I'm not commenting on whether Kanye is musically relevant or not. But using this as a way to prove it makes no sense. Being someone's musical inspiration doesn't mean they're currently "relevant."
