According to whom? She covered Rolling Stone months before the VMA incident, and Fearless was #1 on BB 200 for multiple weeks prior to the incident, and she had crossover hits and the best selling album of 2009. The white mainstream knew who she was before Kanye.

The "white music mainstream" (in other words young White Americans) is a specific demographic; her fame wasn't at that universal/household name level yet.

First it was, Oh, Taylor was only "moderately successful" until Kanye, which was proven wrong because she had her hits and the best selling album that year even before 2009 VMA's.

Then, it was Taylor was a niche act with a "specific demo" . . . because Rolling Stone gives covers to niche country acts that have no mainstream appeal, MTV hands out VMA noms to country acts on the regular, and those country acts have fan blocks big enough to win their faves moon-men .
