Are butch lesbians often the target of discrimination from within their own community the way that femme gays are? I, and many other gays, don't really know.

Why is it so/not so?
Why do the gay and lesbian communities feel the need to weaken any sort of unity within an already oppressed minority community by ostracizing "undesirable" members?
Even when some gays/lesbians who don't fit the respective femme/butch stereotype claim to not have any prejudice about it, there is still often a condescending attitude and an underlying contempt for those individuals fitting the stereotype. Is this phenomenon heteronormativity at its best (worst)?

I don't think they are and it's because of misogyny. Butch lesbians tend to act less feminine and femininity is taboo so femme gays are targeted.

I dont think butch lesbians get treated badly by the community, its the 'lipstick lesbians' who pass as straight that get some hate.
femme gays get treated horribly though, misogyny + self hate is a tragic mix

Why should we always compare who has it worse?
It's not like butch lesbians, the term seems offensive, get it any better. Some of them are raped "to make women out of them" as well as other dehumanizing things.

Well, I DO know that there are at least some lesbians who hold contempt for butch lesbians, I just don't know if it's as widespread.

And there are also some femme gays who hold contempt for masc gays for not being "gay" enough. This can be applied wherever.

I think most of homophobic straight guys who insult/physically abuse fem gays are actually cowards who only go after someone who they see as 'weaker' and 'inferior', I actually think they see butch girls as 'intimidating' so yeah sure they can throw couple of insults here and there but they wouldn't dare to do anything worse. At least from my experience. As for LGBT community I don't have a clue if more 'girly' lesbians have that same attitude as masculine gays who say stuff as 'no fems' 'only real men' and etc.

But yeah both groups are opressed so it shouldn't be a competition.

Probably to an extent. Gays are often the most judgmental groups though, so I don't think the butch lesbians would suffer as much as the femme gays.

I feel like fem gays get **** from the straight community and their fellow gays too, while "butch" lesbians get **** from the straight community, but I'm not sure about how they're treated by fellow lesbians. Could be wrong though.

Of course as many people have already said who has it worse does not matter, because we are fighting the same fight and we should be uniting rather than making it a competition amongst one another.
