Major protests against sex education in Ontario
Source
Quote:
Incensed at a new sex education curriculum they say will be too graphic for young sensibilities, parents of thousands of GTA elementary students kept their children home from school Monday in protest, with a thousand taking placards and chants of “We Say No!” to Premier Kathleen Wynne’s riding office.
In Toronto, almost 35,000 students were absent, a leap of 144 per cent over the previous Monday. In York Region some 2,000 elementary students stayed home, including 70 per cent of students at Teston Village Public School and 40 per cent at Markham Gateway Public School. In Peel Region, 1,170 students stayed home, with some schools missing up to 250 students.
Hardest hit was Toronto’s Thorncliffe Park Public School, where only about 130 children showed up of the usual 1,350 — roughly 90 per cent staying away. At the all-kindergarten school next door, only 90 children showed up of 600, even though the updated health curriculum doesn’t kick in until Grade 1. At nearby Valley Park Middle School, some 590 students were absent out of 950.
“In Grade 1, they should be learning about the ABCs, not sex,” said Thorncliffe Park parent Lubna Awah, who kept her kindergarten son home. “Boys are boys and girls are girls — why should they learn about a third (gender) in Grade 1?” asked Awah, expressing fears the new curriculum will encourage young children to question their gender identity.

As someone who has grown up in a medical family that has always been very open and comfortable with me in talking about all kinds of health-related things, this incenses me. I can't believe that this is something that has to be politicized to come into effect. All parents need to feel comfortable talking to their kids about health, so that when the time comes, kids have some knowledge to fall back on and make good decisions. It boggles my mind and enrages me how many people are uneasy, vague, and awkward when their children ask a question about something like puberty or sex. There's almost a stigma surrounding talking to your kids about these issues, and that's a huge problem in today's society.

And NO, the curriculum is totally fine. Don't talk about it like they teach 6 years old how to have sex Only idiots who never read the curriculum think that way

I was recently reading about comprehensive sex ed for a class, and it does start very young but it doesn't get into the "sex" stuff until puberty. The earlier stuff is mostly just learning anatomy, identity differences (gender, orientation), and different family make-ups (mom/dad, step-parent, single-parent, same sex parents, etc). It's really not problematic curriculum.
What I really love, though, is that American conservatives favor the abstinence-only approach because they believe in "protecting" kids and that this method will prevent social problems like teen pregnancy, out of wedlock births, and the spread of STDs. But because of their abstinence-only program, kids are more uninformed about sexual health, so the conservative's abstinence-only programs are actually causing the problems they claim it prevents.

All the people in the photo are wearing hijabs. Hmm. I wonder why they oppose this.

Hindi is a language, not a religion. You are so uneducated.
The conservative Indians in Toronto are mainly Punjabi Sikhs. I have never heard of Hindus in North America protesting against sex-ed or any conservative agenda [or protest for anything].

Yeah my parents are against this, and even many people my age on Facebook have been openly protesting against this sex-ed. I support it, and unfortunately the curriculum is very exaggerated in their eyes. These people argue that kids will start learning about sex and masturbation at a very young age. The truth is that Grade 1 they will just learn the proper names for body anatomy (what's wrong with that?) and to say NO/avoid rape (which is being misconceived as teaching children to consent to sex). Grade 3 is gender identity, which I think is important to learn about, but these people don't believe in "gender". It is in the later grades (7-8) which they learn about masturbation, which has always been part of the curriculum. They will also be learning about anal and oral sex as other forms of sex that could be dangerous and lead to STD's, and to avoid them (and this is being misconceived as teaching kids how to have anal and oral sex).

Watch this backfire when sally and sam end up pregnant at 16 cuz they thought 'pulling out' was a medical researched method to stop pregnancies.

Ignorant people fighting to keep their children (and our future) ignorant and enslaved to dogma. Acting like Sex Ed is something new to schools.
So what if your children are learning there are LGBTQI people, their families and not to be an asshole to everyone? You can't pretend we don't exist (or force everyone else to pretend we don't) simply because you throw a temper tantrum and want your children to keep your vile prejudices alive for generations to come.

I agree that Grade 1 is too young. Maybe grade 5 or so would be more fitting in my eyes.
But tbh, if these types if parents would loosen up and actually have these kinds of conversations with their children, sex-ed classes wouldn't be needed.
