Blur frontman Damon Albarn, says pop music no longer challenges the establishment as young artists are concerned only with themselves.
The 47-year-old dubbed modern pop artists as existing in a 'selfie generation' of stars who use their music to reveal only how they feel.
Albarn's criticisms are also likely to resonate with people who have been scornful about the work of modern day pop stars such as Taylor Swift and Sam Smith who are known for using their singles to express their emotions about failed relationships.

Albarn said he would like to see popstars talking about what is going on around them and using their music to comment on modern society and politics.

There's still music out that that discusses political and social issues, and it's just not in the Top 40. Taylor and the gorls are not the problem, the consumers are.

I agree. I was listening to the radio and Feeling Myself came on and Beyonce started going on about her "digital drop" stopped the words. It'd didn't rhyme, it's not something fans can relate with and it just made her seem consumed with herself. A lot of artist either talk about themselves or just plain have nothing to say. So sad.

I like Damon but I much prefer songs with artists talking about their own experience that I can relate to than commentary about the world we live in.

I guess he wants more of the latter in mainstream though which is a fair point

Yawn. Another bitter musician from the last generation. Music is about expression, self or otherwise. Leave us millennials alone. There's artists like M.I.A. who have politically charged music about issues today.

I love Damon, but I hate when people on choose to see these types of things. The same exact artists who have these self empowerment songs (what is wrong with this anyway?) ALSO have meaningful songs that everyone can relate to. It's so easy to find the bad in something and express yourself on that I guess... that's what's really wrong with people these days. They find it much easier to spread hate than love.

It's a rap song. Do you have a problem with male rappers and singers being braggarts on songs too?

I don't disagree with him, but I think it's a bigger problem than popstars being self-absorbed.

Labels don't encourage risk taking, and they'll consider anything deviating from feel-good pop as risky.

Then we have the general public and media. People jump on artists when they "step out of their box" and talk politics, social issues and beyond. Gaga and Macklemore had successful "social issue" songs, but even they got criticised for pandering and capitalising on the pink pound.

Artists have been singing about themselves since forever. Even when some of them are making political commentary, it's usually about something that directly affects them.

Not to mention, no one really wants the political opinions of most of today's popstars. Most of them start when they are barely out of school, let alone have great, mindful views about the world.

And wasn't there a rumor that he was working with Adele? These statements would be very hypocritical.

I somewhat agree, but the truth is that you can write and sing about anything you want. That's the beauty of art.
