In serbian/croatian/bosnian calling someone an 'ape' is like saying 'jerk' or 'idiot' in English. It's that common. Stop.

Oh please. Ape doesn't have that connotation at all in other languages. I also never understood why people took any mention of monkeys to be coded racism

while this sounds strange to people who have English as their mothertongue, in the Serbian language the word "ape" is not attached to a race. I mean, they also use the word "horse" as an insult there.

He insulted the crowd in Serbian a couple of years ago also. He's all smiles and jokes, but a nasty piece of work underneath it all.
