There are more than likely scenes with the trans character as a man. Most trans have had surgeries and whatnot and can't turn it on and off like a guy.

He's going to be great in this. Get that second Oscar nomination, Mr. Redmayne.

Transphobia is running rampant in the film industry, they like making movies about trans people for easy award recognition without actually hiring any.

Why would they hire a trans woman though?

Anyway I'm sure he'll be great, and he'll get nominated for the second time. Whether he can win again this early will depend on the competition though

That's what I was thinking. The summary states that he's portraying one of the first trans women to get surgery. This probably means he will be shown before and after the surgery, and as treatment now is much more effective than then, him resembling a man after the surgery will probably be more realistic.

There are plenty of individuals in the trans community that have not undergone surgery so...

It would be ideal for a trans* woman to play the role and deliver the movie's message, but there are very few well-known trans* actresses at all. From the studio's perspective, the film concept itself is probably a risk, and they wouldn't want to add further risk that may result in commercial underperformance.

If the director were to insist on a trans* actress, the movie may not get made at all. Meanwhile, they have an Oscar-winning popular young actor waiting to play the role. It's better to be pragmatic and compromise to deliver the movie's message than for it to never see the light of day.
