Listen, it'll be a long while before Hollywood will allow trans actors to play cis roles. As long as trans roles will be offered to cis actors, trans actors will get literally no chance to make name. To cast a cis actor for a trans role because there are no high-profile trans actors just reinforces the problem. I like Eddie and many people wouldn't have any issues with cis actors playing trans roles if trans people had those same opportunities (because that is what acting is all about), but that is simply not what's happening right now. I'm not necessarily against Eddie taking this role, but I get where the criticism comes from. It would be nice to see trans actors getting an opportunity like this.
To say that trans actors aren't able to portray pre-op characters doesn't really make sense to me to be honest. Wouldn't the same thing happen with cis actors portraying post-op characters (in this case a cis male playing a trans female)?

To make things clearer with an example: Laverne Cox, a trans woman who plays a trans woman on Orange Is The New Black, was nominated for the Best Guest
Actress In A Comedy Series at the 2014 Emmy awards. The same thing would probably happen with the oscars,
