It is the second such ruling in Egypt since January when another 21-year-old was jailed for three years for declaring on Facebook that he is an atheist.
Judicial sources said that Sharif Gaber "was sentenced to one-year in prison for insulting Islam and promoting atheism, but could be freed on a bail of 1,000 pounds ($130, 117 euros) until his appeal trial".
The sentence was handed down on Monday by a criminal court in the northeastern city of Ismailiya, where Gaber studies literature at university.
So if he was arrested for being gay you would still say 'he should have known the consequences since he lives there'?
Egyptian arrested for being an atheist
Had to fix that...
Yes he should absolutely know the consequences of his actions within his own country. To not know is to be foolish. I suspect he was well aware of what might be headed his way since this is not the first time it has happened.

No. I'm sure he wouldn't be posting that he's gay on FB in a country where you get arrested for it. He shouldn't have posted this either. And whether someone is posting "I'm atheist" or "I'm muslim"... why? Why put that on Facebook, who cares? Especially living in a country where you could get in trouble for it.

These two posts exactly.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong what happened, but damn you should KNOW better if you live in a country where the authorities will get you for posting things that they consider to be radical... it's like he was asking for trouble

Ugh, so Socratic! Gross!
Just because it's the law in the country doesn't mean it's right and he should follow it.
