Mackie said that Selma is having trouble at the box-office and didn’t fare well with Oscar voters because people are turned off by*the film’s subject matter. “People are just tired of being bombarded with race right now,” Mackie said. “So everybody is shying away from certain topics and certain movies.” Mackie*believes that the Oscars aren’t being discriminatory but that they are simply rewarding the best the industry has to offer this year. “If you look at all the movies and actors that are nominated, they all gave damn good performances,” Mackie said. “Me specifically, if thats something I want, I have to step my game up. I don't think the Oscars are racist either. So far every POC movie that has been nominated the pasr couple of years has been about slavery or the civil rights movement. Two of them being consider classics; The Help and 12 Years

We need roles that transcend just being black in America, tbh. Can black actors get roles like Jennifer Aniston in Cake? How about roles like Julianne Moore in Still Alice? Lets the industry expand past the bubble they put themselves in.
