A second former Ohio high school football player convicted of raping a West Virginia girl following an alcohol-fueled party has been released from juvenile detention.
Mays is enrolled in high school near Steubenville and hopes to resume classes soon, Neeman said. Mays, 18, and one of his Steubenville High School teammates, Ma’Lik Richmond, were each found delinquent in the 2012 rape of the 16-year-old girl. Mays was also found delinquent for using his phone to take a photo of the nude victim.
Richmond, 18, received a one-year sentence and rejoined the football team last fall, and in November a judge agreed to less restrictive sex offender reporting requirements. Richmond had been ordered to register his address every six months for the next 20 years. The judge agreed to reclassify him so that he has to register only once a year for the next decade.
A statement from the girl’s family and their attorney says they hope Mays and Richmond maintain a higher standard of morals and values as their rehabilitation continues. “We hope that they realize the magnitude of lifelong pain that they have caused the victim and pray that the memory of their crimes lives in their souls as a constant reminder to treat women with dignity and respect,” the statement said.
Mays takes that statement to heart, Neeman said. “The main focus here is rehabilitation, so that they understand what they did was wrong,” he said Wednesday.
This is so disgusting, he should've been put in prison never mind a juvenile detention centre. I mean he's an adult, yes?
This slap on the wrist 'punishment' is such a slap in the face to the poor victim who will probably never recover from the savage attack
While their actions were certainly despicable, there is certainly a case for treating minors in this manner. I'd rather see young people rehabilitated (I'd rather see ALL prisoners rehabilitated, but that's for another day) than having their entire lives marred by one mistake. Now, that's not to diminish the magnitude of said mistake. What they did was awful and they deserve to pay for it. I also think they deserve the chance to make a better life the second go.
While I am totally anti-rape and sexual abuse, the whole situation was one big mistake. Every TEEN there was crap-faced wasted. There were many others watching and filming. Nobody really did anything to stop it when anybody there could have. The victim never would have known if videos and photos didn't start circulating a few days later. So while what they did was severe, it was all alcohol induced stupidity. I think that they're well aware of what they did and I don't think that they're a danger to society. Hopefully they go around and lecture the dangers of drinking too much and teach kids to draw the line and make better choices
