The river landing was calculated, and the pilot nearly had full control of what he wanted to do. Although the engines had gone out, the pilots were still able to navigate to safety as they hadn't ascended to maximum altitude yet.
With the AirAsia flight, I'm assuming that the flight was already at 35k feet and probably had a tragic stall. Once that happens, the plane just nosedives from the air uncontrollably.
