Since your summer officially starts December 21st, how is your school year set up? and do you get snow in your winter? (is it cold enough?)

We start school on February 1st and finish on December 15th. You get 6 weeks of Summer holidays instead of the whole summer off (3 months). That's because we have 4 terms instead of 2 semesters. So it goes:

December 15th to February 1st- 6 weeks of Summer holidays
Term 1 (10 weeks of school)
2 weeks of Easter holidays
Term 2 (10 weeks of school)
2 weeks of winter holidays (June/July)
Term 3 (10 weeks of school)
2 weeks of spring holidays
Term 4 (10 weeks of school)
Summer holidays (6 weeks again)

We literally start school in the beginning of the year and finish at the end of the year. So I'm "class of 2009" because my entire senior year was in 2009. I started in the February and finished in the December. I'm probably being biased, but I think it makes way more sense than doing half your senior year in one year and the other half in the next year. Then again, I suppose schooling years have to revolve around when summer is.

I also think our way makes more sense as far as holidays are concerned. 10 weeks of school > 2 weeks of holidays > 10 weeks of school > 2 weeks of holidays > 10 weeks of school > 2 weeks of holidays > 10 weeks of school > 6 weeks of summer holidays.

I can't imagine having two 20 week semesters and then 3 months of summer off. Summer holidays would be so long and boring. And by the time you went back, you would have forgotten half the **** you learnt.

Yeah I agree with Rihinvention, the school year in Australia is set up better - less time off from learning but more reasonable breaks throughout the year.

I remember by the end of the 6 weeks summer holiday I was getting bored out of my skin so 3 months would be a catastrophe

Our Summer starts December 1st actually.

Basically we all start at the beginning of the year (I start Uni in late February while the school kids would start around January 20th) and finish around November. Primary and high school is divided into four "terms" which usually go for 8-10 weeks, each separated by a one or two week holiday. Uni is split into two semesters, semester one finishes in June or something and we got 6/7 weeks holiday, and semester two finishes in early November.

The American school year pisses me off it's so dumb. And I hate how y'all call Uni and College "School" like wtf when you say "school" I just assume you are talking about high SCHOOL or middle SCHOOL whatever tf that is, or something.

I have to say though, I like their idea of "middle school."

In Australia, middle school doesn't exist. You have primary school (elementary school) which is kindergarten to Year 6 and then you have high school, which is Year 7 to Year 12. Middle school and high school are integrated here.

But considering how embarrassing year 7-9 were, I kind of wish they separated them here too.

Why are you calling them years what's next, "Sixth Form"? Sounds like some level "Goku has reached his Sixth Form!"

You're right about the summers honestly being too long, especially for college kids. My last summer break was 3 1/2 months.

6 weeks is perfect, and I would appreciate more breaks inbetween like how your system is structured. We may have a longer summer, but we got less long other breaks as a result.

Because I live in a different country where that's what they are called.

my school started the xmas holidays the second last week of November and we didn't go back till after Australia Day, often the first week of Feb

We don't get snow here in Australia. The worst it ever gets is just some rain and coldy days. I'm from Melbourne, Victoria and the coldest it has ever been was about -3 degrees Celcius (so like 28 F).

sounds confusing tbh. i like going to school september-june and having june-august off with a few 2 week breaks here and there.

We do get snow sometimes tho. I've experienced snow at Mt Wellington (I went up there and had no idea it was snowing at the time so it was so cool, I was all dressed in summer clothes), and Mt Bulla some place in NSW for a week.

They are, you just need to shed your restrictions, also the restrictions on knives: did you know you cannot even import folding knives that are openable with one hand into Australia? They will be destroyed by customs, I've experience it firsthand. You're stuck with pre-1950s-style pocket knives. And you know what the zany thing is, those knives are perfectly legal in Australia... Australia Customs just seizes them for no reason.

Do you have free education in Australia?

Thank God for my 3 months of summer tbh.

No, we call it university, college or community college. And you can refer to university, college, middle school or high school as "school"; it's a way to describe an institute of learning.
