Where's the lie? Just because it's in phones doesn't mean it's popular. You have to buy expensive charging pads or ugly cases, not to mention it's not nearly as efficient as simply plugging it in.
Besides, what's the benefit of wirelessly charging a phone over plugging it in anyway? If it's wirelessly charging you can't even hold it, and you have to wait at least 1.5x longer for it to charge completely. Until it charges as fast as plugging it in, it's pointless for phones.
Putting it in the iWatch actually makes sense since you wouldn't be using it whether it was plugged in or wireless, and a watch isn't something you normally have to plug in (like all other smart watches on the market right now).

Yeah... they're copying something that was just announced for a phone that has been in development for 2+ years
Considering their philosophy for the 4" screen that it was the perfect size to use one-handed, it's not surprising that they'd make a mode to bring back that convenience.
