A transvestite is someone who wears clothes associated with the other gender. I think you're thinking of the other "T" word that is used as a slur against trans individuals. That one is indeed offensive.

No, its etimological meaning is someone who wears clothes typical of the other gender. In Italian 'travestito' is not an offensive way to call transexual people.

It's great that you are much educated, much smart -- however most people don't know the difference between any of the T words which is why most of the time, it's used offensively.

But the word isn't inherently offensive. When it's used improperly is when it crosses the line.
