Thunderstorms aren't usually a problem for civilian airplanes though, I've had a flight of 2 hours through a thunderstorm before, and even though it wasn't comfortable with all the turbulence, thunder, and squeking noises, it was not a problem for the plane... Even if the lightning hits the plane there shouldn't be a problem, it must be really bad for a plane to crash in a storm

If you look at the satellite image on this page you can see that there are extremely heavy thunderstorms in the area. Thunderstorms in west Africa are often the precursor to tropical waves, which are in turn often the precursor to tropical storms.

Exactly! Any form of fatal accident is unfortunate and this is incredibly sad, but a lot of these recent reports are only being brought to the surface because of the recent plane being shot down. I doubt many of the people here are aware that last year there were 139 plane crashes, or the year before that there were 155 plane crashes, which works out to be around 12 and 13 crashes a month respectively.
Traveling by plane is still more safe than driving in your car. Funny though, how people hear a few major airplane catastrophes and are suddenly scared for anyone they know, including themselves, to fly, yet can hear 3 or 4 reports of car accidents a day and still happily speed down the street without a worry in the world.
Regardless, I hope for nothing but the best.

Chile...
3 plane crashes within a week. Or 4 within 4 months. I will never put my foot in a plane again.

It's logical people get scared from this news, but in a few weeks everyone will have moved on tbh, they'll book flights again...

yes, there are plane crashes every year, but rarely are they by major airlines on major-brand jetliners
It's expected that those tiny two-engine planes, learjets, etc have more risk, but not everyone is taking them.
but when two Boeing 777s and a MD go down in one year, that's pretty bizarre. Boeings, Airbuses, Embraers, and MDs tend to be incredibly safe, and you rarely hear about them going down these days for any reason.

If people were serious about statistics and eliminating risk, they'd never leave the house. Everyone just needs to calm down a little

I wouldn't say yesterday or today's tragedy involved major airlines...

My parents are flying to Greece today. I was already nervous for them but this is only making things worse.

Air Algerie: Fleet Size --> 50 (Only Airbus, Boeing, and 2 MD-80s) and they are working to join SkyTeam and partner with Lufthansa
TransAsia is small, but still does International flights and only uses Airbus and ATR planes. + they've only had one fatal crash in 60+ years of flying
It's not like they were some private-only small businesses

You're forgetting the fact that although each year sees many crashes, they are not major freak accidents like the past 3 commercial airliners which wiped out 100+ people. Most of these crashes consist of no fatalities and were simply recreational aircraft crashes involving small jets etc, which is EXTREMELY different to the 3 recent disasters that have occurred. It is just ridiculous that in the space of a few months multiple commercial airliners have had fatalities - people are definitely not overreacting when they're now hesitant to fly etc. It's just ****ed.
The difference between flying and driving is that with flying, you are putting your trust in someone else to take you from A to B. Whereas the reason people don't really fear driving after seeing car accidents is because they are in control of their own car, therefore they have the conscious decision to minimise their own risk etc. It's different when you don't have any control of the situation, like the 298 people when they sat happily on that plane not knowing they were about to be shot down out of their will.
