10 years ago, Celine Dion's "Let's Talk About Love" was the biggest selling female album in the United States of that year and it sold 8.6 million copies in one year.
The biggest selling female album in 2008 is Taylor Swift's self-titled album. It sold about 1.2 million this year.
like they are using cards now in some stores lmao. Like you buy the card and you download the music. They usually come with extras like Music Videos and stuff. I saw a lot for different CD's at Best Buy like a while ago. They might replace albums now? I doubt it lmao
Ten years is a long time and there will be a lot of technology created in that time.
I've been hearing about something called "move-only" music where you can download a song to one folder but you can't copy it or move it to any other location without it getting erased. Sounds controversial but I don't know--it sounds like push is coming to shove in the industry vs. iTunes debate and DRM will actually get tighter and more convoluted. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Maybe they'll find out a way to stop p2p/bit******* but I think the pandora is out of the box now. Then of course, there's still the issue of people buying a cd and then burning copies for friends
No matter what I don't think cd sales will ever fully recover to what they were in the 90's because of legal single-download outlets like iTunes--the industry just needs to accept that loss in profit. I just wish they'd find a way to stop internet piracy/multiple-cd burning. If things continue the way they're going now I think the best selling album of 2018 will be a little over 1 million in sales.
by 2018, I think we might have a successor to CD.... but I don't know if it'll be much different (like how a blu ray looks like a DVD in size & shape, however, the quality is better). I think they'll try and introduce something new to save the industry
itunes will be the # 1 music retailer, beating out CD sales, and song prices will probably increase. i can also see a change in RIAA certifications.....
in 2018:
125,000: Silver (introduced since many sales could be this low)
250,000: Gold
500,000: Platinum
1,000,000: 2X platinum
5,000,000: Diamond
I hope they find a better way to sell music. It's not like I'll be *sad* just because they're getting less money from us. plus CDs are so fcking expensive in my country so no.
