Let's start saying that I love both Japan and J-Pop since I was a child and my two Queens are Kumi and Namie so this is definitely NOT against J-Pop.
To me japanese music is the one that offers more variety than all the other genres, and that's why I love it, cuz I can find every type of music.
The fact is that it's kinda sad if I think about how active the J-Pop fanbase was 5 years ago (ore before) compared to nowadays, so I was wondering why isn't it like before?
Because they actually sell other countries' pop in...other countries. J-pop isn't as popular as it used to be because the industry won't step into the 21st century still.
Hikaru's still on hiatus…
Ayumi's style is getting stale…
Namie's the only one that manages to stay on top compared to the other J-Pop females…
And most of the thread is only aobut the women… I don't even remember the last time a male was discussed… it was most likely Hirai Ken since he was collaborating with Namie…
I'm assuming it's because of Utada's break. Her introduction to the western world through Kingdom Hearts and her subsequent attempt to enter the American market made J-Pop blow up over here.

Yes, we need a J-Pop artist to breakout in America or UK…
there's no subteams, updaters, anything. just a bunch of people whining in other artists' tumblr tags.
people got scared off by the complete inaccesisbility and draconian copyright crap and now that's actively preventing people from even discovering new acts or new music from old acts.
if people were able to actually watch a whole Namie video legally online or buy, like, any of Kumi's post 2004 albums on iTunes that would be a huge step up. But the industry actively is preventing its own world wide presence. The only artists I can think of that actively reach out are AKB48 (because they have nothing to gain but money at this point), Kyary (because she owes her fame to viral videos literally), Miyavi (who left his old label SPECIFICALLY to be able to do more internationally) and Crystal (trying for US career). Literally nobody else actually tries because their labels, for some fcked up reason, literally don't want to sell their music here or even upload the videos.
Which is stupid because they can only either a) make money from album/single sales and streams, or b) make money from video ads like the rest of Vevo.

Ayumi is much bigger than Utada overseas so this theory is wrong but I applaud your attempt at reasoning

Spill it! I haven't been able to watch a full big star JPOP video on youtube in quite a while. Japan's music industry is being really stubborn, and it's not even fair to the music fans.
I feel like K-Pop overshadowing J-Pop in popularity & interest definitely has something to do with it. But some new Utada could help J-Pop get some attention.
