The Best of the Best Week 4: Keep Breakin' Your Black Heart
As Ryan said before, this week is RIDICULOUS. Playing this week are arguably the two most important acts to come out of the 1990s ( Radiohead and Bjork), as well as three acts that started in the 90s, but really hit their stride this decade ( Destiny's Child, Death Cab for Cutie and Usher). Alongside them are three acts that one cannot imagine the "noughties" without, in Rihanna, Alicia Keys and Arcade Fire. ATRL Rock (a genre if there ever was one) is well-represented this week, with My Chemical Romance and System of a Down playing. And, if mediocrity is your thing, look no further than Snow Patrol! This week is stacked, with all of the artists bringing their a-game - and just think: according to you, these are only their fourth best songs! Imagine what they'll bring out as the game continues.
Rihanna, performing Breakin' Dishes
Radiohead, performing House of Cards
My Chemical Romance, performing Welcome to the Black Parade
Bjork, performing Declare Independence
Usher, performing Caught Up
Alicia Keys, performing No One
Destiny's Child, performing Through with Love
Arcade Fire, performing Keep the Car Running
Snow Patrol, performing Spitting Games
System of a Down, performing Chop Suey
Death Cab for Cutie, performing Your Heart is an Empty Room
Post your comments on all eleven songs in this thread, and send me your rankings VIA PM. REMEMBER, ELEVEN = MOST FAVORITE, ONE = LEAST FAVORITE.
And here are next week's eleven, in a week we'll be calling WOMP WOMP FOR BEN WEEK.
Outkast
LCD Soundsystem
Beck
Ashanti
Roisin Murphy
Nelly
Nelly Furtado
Mariah Carey
U2
Daft Punk
Weezer
Seriously - Outkast? LCD Soundsystem? U2? Beck? WEEZER?!?!? Ben, this is your life.
TOP FOURS ARE DUE BY SATURDAY AT MIDNIGHT.

Rihanna, "Breakin' Dishes" - snarling beat and pissy attitude. Perfect way to make Rihanna be.
Radiohead, "House of Cards" - very much a Radiohead song with its sonic twists but more mellow at times than they normally allow. Still instantly good and still an instant recall that it's them.
My Chemical Romance, "Welcome to the Black Parade" - a weird twist from their previous album but helps lay out the ideas they were going for on their recent album.
Bjork, "Declare Independence" - Bitch comes through with a shouting contest from hell and beats you with it. Bjork be crazy but her ode for Greenlandic independence is universal for all people and her primal screams with the horns blaring is perfection.
Usher, "Caught Up" - Lazy and annoying and the video was a shithole. but not as bad as DC3.
Alicia Keys, "No One" - It's Alicia Keys by the numbers but still a rather good song. She should probably not continue that opening note slide thing she does, though.
Destiny's Child, "Through With Love" - Hate. This. Song.
Arcade Fire, "Keep the Car Running" - The opening sounds like...heh...a Balkan Eurovision entry. like it should have native dancing and a gourd on stage, not some whiny emo **** who should know better. Good song, shame about the vocals.
Snow Patrol, "Spitting Games" - Jangly bit but a nice twist on the Britpop scene before it's strange reemergence post-Franz. Love the vocals, even if the lyrics are a tad wonky
System of a Down, "Chop Suey" - The reason I even know who they are. Psychotic and evil mixed with longing and despare and I love every fiber of it.
Death Cab for Cutie, "Your Heart is an Empty Room" - Boring.
For Your Consideration...

Rihanna- Breakin Dishes
I know a lot of people want this to be a single. I disagree, this song is boring. I gave it 2-3 plays and it just doesn't work for me.
Radiohead- House of cards
Not their best, but Radiohead are one of the most influential bands in the last 10-15 years IMO. Video is nice.
MCR- Welcome to the black parade
One of their better songs. Only Famous Last Words is better than this song. Nice video.
Bjork- Declare Independence
Sorta iffy on this song.
Usher- Caught up
Well, nice dance video. I was feeling this for a while.
Alcia Keys- No one
One of her better songs, but I don't have as high expectations of her like most people. I have never been a big fan of hers.
Destiny Child's- Through with love
Not feeling this as much as I used to.
Arcade Fire- Keep the car running
Heard this a few times, somewhat good.
Snow Patrol- Spitting games
This is how my liking for this band began. Good song, not their best by any means. And no Bart, they are not mediocrity!
System of a down- Chop Suey
Probably the best of this bunch IMO. Interesting video
Death cab for cutie- Your heart is an empty room
Iffy on this one.

Breakin Dishes - It's been a while since I heard this song, but it is still one of the best tracks from GGGB despite the super-saturation of all her singles. Its got a fun change in the beat towards the end, which I really really like. Definitely quite interesting to see RIhanna handling such a song, even though it seems like some female-empowerment song by Beyonce.
House of Cards - Radiohead is an iconic band, but this song is just way too mellow and repetitive in my opinion. They have come up with significantly better songs so I assume that they will hopefully be in the Top 3.
Welcome to the Black Parade - This song, despite not being their best song ever, is still epic in evry sense of the word. The drum-roll at the beginning is an incredible intro to a major change with is energetic and frenetic without being too jolly. The lyrics are also quite a tour-de-force and the whole idea of a black parade is perfection. I doubt any song will challenge it for my 11 points.
Declare Independence - Bjork is NOT my cup of tea, and no matter how much I try to like this song, it still seems like a tremendous mess of noise and music. Hmmmmmmmmm...actually after listening it to a second time it sounds even more bananas then some of Gwen's wilder singles.
Caught Up - I was never really into Usher's music, but even though this song isn't my fave from him, it is still very endurable and it is mildly amusing. The chorus is catchy, but even though there have been superior RnB songs in the past years, this one still raises the bar, even if by just a few millimeters.
No One - Alicia has been going from strength to strength but this song really shines even when compared to the stellar Fallin. Its a song which starts slow and at first it looks like nothing more than a simple mid-tempo ballad, but it keeps gaining momentum throughout the song, resulting in a final chorus which sounds more like a youth anthem than anything else. Definitely one of the best of the 2000's.
Through With Love - This is not working out for me. Destiny's Child have many awesome singles which surpass this song. However, this isn't to say its a bad song. Far from it. But it still could have been much better.
Keep the Car Running - This song was quite a hit locally and radio stations used to play it endlessly. Its got something different and very unusual about it, and thus, it is a must listen for all those who want to listen to the something slightly more original.
Snow Patrol - I'm not heir biggest fan, and they've had quite a roller coaster of singles, ranging from epic songs to more tedious ones. Spitting games falls somewhere between the two, even though I'd say its closer to being one of their best singles.
Chop Suey - Interesting pick and even though I prefer modern rock a la Muse, this is still a great song, which calls for your attention. Still, I'm not the biggest fan of Serj's vocals...
Your Heart is an Empty Room - I like it.. a lot.

Rihanna- Breakin Dishes
I have no idea why people like this AWFUL song. It sounds like a mature Ring The Alarm and that was camp.
Radiohead- House of cards
I love the beat, so soothing and his voice isn't so bad once I got used to the moaning. Not bad.
MCR- Welcome to the black parade
Noise.
Bjork- Declare Independence
I kept saying "What The Hell???" the entire time. The guitar was kinda hot.
Usher- Caught up
I love this song especially the adlibs.... one of his best dance songs this decade.
Alicia Keys- No one
I love the lyrics to this song and the lover's rock beat. Her voice can be irritating though. Her weakest lead single to date.
Destiny Child's- Through with love
I LOVE this song.... On Beyonce's 2nd verse you can feel how pissed she is and Kelly is so vulnerable then Michelle just takes it straight to church. DC CLASSIC!!!
Arcade Fire- Keep the car running
I liked the beat.
Snow Patrol- Spitting games
I actually liked this.... wow. Nice song.
System of a down- Chop Suey
Boring garbage.
Death cab for cutie- Your heart is an empty room
I fell asleep....

Rihanna, performing Breakin' Dishes
Powerful pop song. The vocals can be annoying in some parts of the song but the beat is awesome.
Radiohead, performing House of Cards
This is the only song I like of their last album.
My Chemical Romance, performing Welcome to the Black Parade
I like this song since the first time I heard it live on the VMA's 2006. The lyrics aren't that great but I like the music.
Bjork, performing Declare Independence
Sorry to say this, but this song is awful. I just wanted this song to end fast when I started to listen.
Usher, performing Caught Up
Generic and boring. Not my favorite song of him.
Alicia Keys, performing No One
Amazing song. Great lyrics and music and the vocals are good as always. One of her best songs.
Destiny's Child, performing Through with Love
I can't believe that this song is in the top 4. I didn't like it. They have better tracks.
Arcade Fire, performing Keep the Car Running
This is the first time I hear a song of this band and I must say that it's good. I like it.
Snow Patrol, performing Spitting Games
Good song. It's not one of my favorite songs of them but I like it.
System of a Down, performing Chop Suey
One of my favorite songs of this band. I love the intro.
Death Cab for Cutie, performing Your Heart is an Empty Room
The song is a little boring but it's not bad. I like the melody.
