Hong Kong drives on the left, China on the right.
Hong Kong has it's own currency: the Hong Kong Dollar.
Hong Kongers need a visa to travel to China, semi-vise versa.
Hong Kong is free and democratic, China is communist with differing laws.
Hong Kong's official languages are English & Cantonese, China's is Mandarin.
Hong Kongers hold a Hong Kong passport, China people hold a Chinese passport.
Hong Kong has various systems differing to China's - including education & healthcare.
Hong Kong is categorized on it's own (seperate from China) by various institutions worldwide.

I don't know about Vatican but Singapore and Monaco are also considered countries.
Hong Kong is a SAR, but it's always categorized as either a city or a country - depending on who you ask.

It's only a city that has an autonomy in China. It's hardly a separate country.

I know it's more of a city but I think of it as it's own country because it is so different from China for the reasons you listed in the OP

That's only the tip of the iceberg, Hong Kong is completely different to China. (I've travelled to both)

I thought of it a bit like Scotland/Wales/Ireland/England - in that I knew it was separate, but it's still represented by the overstate on an international level. Seems it's even more independent that I thought though!

I'd still say City rather than a Country.

It's funny that some people in HongKong would rather be the slaves and being colonized rather than admit they are Chinese. Maybe just being slaved for too long. lol.
