Ellie Goulding: Adele Put British Music On The Map
Quote:
Adele helped put British music “on the map” for Americans, with many of our friends across the pond “idolising” UK bands, singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding has said.
Celebrating two nominations in the Best British Female Solo Artist and Best British Single of the Year categories, Ellie said Adele has played a huge part in how popular British music has become around the world.
"They're getting into bands that we've been into for a really long time - and we've had phases of music that not a lot of countries, especially America," she said.
"America is very different to here, I think, and I genuinely feel like they idolise a lot of British rock bands and singers, and I think Adele really kind of put us on the map in such a big way.
"Things are amazing in America - British artists are doing so well there."
She also tried to sing a bit of her favourite guilty pleasure song – but she proved no match for the notoriously high notes in Shakespeare’s Sister hit Stay.
She does have a point, there was the odd UK star here and there making it in the US but now you've got Bastille, Ellie, John Newman, Emeli Sandé and more going big over there
Now that I think about it they have a similar way of singing. There's this riff that they both do really quick with the same timbre. It's cool that they come from the same place

That's not so much to do with Adele per se, but US labels having faith that music with soul in a way and do well in the US.
I love Ellie and I see her point, but I don't totally agree. Elton John, The Beatles, Leona Lewis, Coldplay, Amy Winehouse, etc. were all very big here. But in the grand scheme of things, yes Adele paved the way for the current British invasion, and I thank her for that because I think the Brits are doing music the right way right now.
