The amount of delusion in this thread is unreal. Everyone trying to shamelessly sneak in their faves into the top 5

Very. For instance, Tina Turner is way more successful than Cher.

I think it's probably Adele, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Madonna, and either Janet Jackson or Celine Dion.

Adele? Seriously?

I forgot about Barbra. She's still the best selling female artist in the US when it comes to album sales and she has 2 Oscars, a few Golden Globes, 5 Emmys, 10 Grammys including the Lifetime Achievement Award and her films have grossed over $1 billion.

 @ everyone ignoring Shania Twain
Y'all so obsessed with numbers, you'd think these stats would convince most people:
ONLY female to have three diamond albums in the US
Biggest selling album by a solo female artist of all time w/ approximately 40 million sales worldwide (does The Bodyguard count?).
Hits like Man! I Feel Like A Woman, You're Still The One and That Don't Impress Me Much are testimony to the fact that one doesn't need a great position in the charts to make classics.
Pop music isn't one specific genre, it's whatever's popular at that time. And Shania definitely became a pop girl by 1998 as a result of pushing so many albums and increasingly becoming a familiar name in the media. She was inescapable.
In any case, she's definitely "above" Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Adele in terms of success. These girls are relatively new to the game, especially compared to someone like Shania. So, I'm hesitant of including said girls on the list. Like, in 1996, everybody would be naming Alanis Morissette amongst the top five and in 2003 Norah Jones.

Whether The Bodyguard is a Whitney album or not doesn't change the fact that it was her ERA, which was bigger than come on over.
Also what's Shania's impact like outside of sales? Did her tours do well? Was she in any hit movies? Did she have any relevance in pop culture?

1. Madonna
2 Whitney/ Mariah
3. Barbra Streisand
4. Celine
5. Janet
6. Diana Ross
7. Cher
8. Aretha Franklin
9. Britney Spears
10. Beyonce
I think these are all deserving of being in the top ten since they've all had various levels of successful careers and apart from Whitney, all are still in some way becoming more successful
