Gareth Malone shades Adele and the other pop girls, + Elvis
Quote:
"Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan would not make it as choir singers according to celebrity choirmaster Gareth Malone.
In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, 38-year-old Malone ticks off various singing superstars as ineligible for choir service.
Presley, the singer behind such groundbreaking hits as ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and ‘Heartbreak Hotel’, received this cool judgement: 'There is a voice there but it became very mannerism heavy.'
Paul McCartney does not fair much better: 'Much better than John Lennon but you wouldn’t want either of them singing Schubert.'
A surprise inclusion in this black list is the multi-Grammy winning singer songwriter, Adele. 'She lets out too much air, too much force,' said Mr Malone. 'It gives it emotion but she’s damaging her voice.'
These rather blunt assessments are based on his belief that many pop stars such as Madonna, Rihanna and Lady Gaga might 'be able to hold a tune but put them on the stage in Royal Opera House and you wouldn’t be able to hear them'. Mr. Malone is no longer the unknown clean shaven choirmaster of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s youth and community choirs.
He has won two BAFTAs for his hit reality show The Choir, been awarded an OBE, scored a UK number 1 hit single with the Military Wives and set up multiple choirs in schools, hospitals and workplaces around the country.
UK’s best known choirmaster is not adverse to the X Factor show but looks at it as an “extension of Stars In Their Eyes” rather than a music show.
His TV work has been marked by the emotional release all of his choirs found in the music, most notably the Military Wives singing about their partners serving in the Middle East.
To this day the choir member who most affected him was the shy tattooed military wife, Sam Stevenson, who became his soloist in the Military Wives’ charity Christmas chart topper ‘Wherever You Are’.
'She’ll always stay with me but getting to people to sing is the most incredible experience,' he said. 'Everything about what I do is unexpected.'
The final of his current series Sing While You Work will be aired next Sunday.
'It will be incredibly emotional,' he reveals.
'You see how far these singers have come, it’s their story as well as the story of their voices.'
After the New Year, he will be travelling the country with his first ever tour with his choir Gareth Malone’s Voices."

Honestly, I think this dude is too irrelevant to shade artists as great as these. What do you think?

He obviously has musical knowledge, but I disagree with some of his statements. I don't agree with his statement about Elvis or Adele. I do agree with what he says about Paul McCartney, though. As for the pop girls, I would agree with what he says about Rih and Madonna to a certain extent, but not with Gaga. Gaga has a pretty loud and powerful voice. I mean, none of them are really cut out for choir music. But the way he talks about them, the points he is bringing up for most of them don't have to do with being in a choir or anything. And the way he says it almost makes me wonder if he thinks he is good enough to pull off the vocals of legends like Adele or Elvis.

I only agree with some of them, as I previously stated. I mean, it's one thing to have an opinion, but the fact that he has trashed so many of the greats in the same interview kind of gives me the impression that he is being a bit of a know-it-all.

She really can't. They may all be three of the biggest pop girls, but Gaga is on an entirely different vocal level.

He's right about Adele. Her voice is poor.

Well they're pop and rock singers, not choir singers
I agree with the Adele point though

I don't get it with all the Adele shade going on here. Especially coming from someone who stans for Rihanna. She's got kind of a breathy voice, and honestly, Adele doesn't really let out that much air when she sing. "She should work on her voice"? Give me a break. Adele is not the most talented artist in the world. She does have room for improvement. But she's got a phenomenally soulful voice that can move anyone and she's real and honest, and she's more talented than most of the pop girls put together. I don't get the sudden Adele shade at all, and I'm not just saying that because I'm an Adele stan. You people make it sound like she's got Rebecca Black vocals or something. There's a reason Adele's sophomore album alone outsold most of your faves' entire discographies.

Well my first response obviously is "I don't know her"
Secondly I usually find most of these music experts to be quite bitter at pop stars. Somehow its as if though they aspire to be as admired as them because they know so much technically about music.
I wouldn't take what the say seriously. Am sure what they also know is that you could technically have the best voice and singing skills but will likely flop even with that. With regard to Adele she's said so herself that she tried to get technically trained with one lesson but didn't like it cause it made her think too much about what she was singing and felt as though it was losing the emotion of it all. And at the end of it all its her best trait and is what separates her from the rest, something that you need in order to be sucessful popstar by the way.

Oh he's just saying that those girls don't have the proper resonance to be able to sing in an opera house like some opera stars. I think they use indirect/distant mics. and you have to be able to ousting the orchestra behind you.
There are a lot of factors to this.
This is something Bey, Mariah and Whitney can probably do.

While I like Adeles voice there isn't anything wrong with telling someone they can improve their vocals. I think she's an amazing singer, not much of an vocalist and that is something I want her to work on. Mariah & Whitney were great vocalist that could move you both emotionally and vocally and I want Adele to be able to do that. Sometimes she feels incredibly monotone. In my opinion she could become soo much better.

At the end of the day, we are talking about acts, who became "populair culture" and you don't have to sing like an angel, aslong as you get the right image, right songs and right support.

Lady Gaga, Madonna and Adele aren't classical music, this guy teaches singers who want to sing classical music, that's two different fields, it would be like asking a military trainer if any police officer would survive a battlefield...
