BALTIMORE (WJZ)– A fraternity at Morgan State University is on probation until 2015 following accusations that it rejected a recruit because he is gay.
The university determined the Alpha Iota chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi did, in fact, discriminate against Brian Stewart because he is gay.
Stewart spoke to WJZ earlier this year and cited text messages as evidence of the discrimination.
“Stop shading these intelligent [expletives] give them the perception of a `fair and equal opportunity,’” one message read.
Morgan State University released a statement Tuesday, outlining the terms of the probation.
“The Alpha Iota chapter of Kappa Alpha has been determined to have violated certain university regulations, procedures and policies,” the statement reads. “As a result, the chapter has been placed on disciplinary probation until fall 2015. During the probationary period, the chapter cannot register as an official organization or student group with the university. The chapter cannot participate in any university sponsored event or activity, and cannot sponsor or host any event on or off campus.”
Stewart will be a first generation college graduate. He holds a 3.2 GPA and has interned at the White House. He says he complained to make sure other students don’t endure the same discrimination.
“This is a proper course of action, mainly to raise awareness that this happens,” he said.
Ironically, Stewart receives scholarships from Kappa Alpha Psi to attend Morgan State University.
Not for nothing but as a gay man I can see why a fraternity would reject another gay man based on their sexual orientation. How can you make a stranger your "brother" with any doubt in your mind that they feel attraction to you? I have plenty of straight friends who I look at as brothers but it took years to establish that relationship. I swear society does far too much sometimes -_-
FYI I'm not saying it's "right" they did that but it's understandable
It's a frat group what do you expect? And who cares? You can't force them to accept people anyways, clearly he should find another group, why would he even want to join this one after they showed intolerance?

Clearly you do think its right if you're trying to rationalize it and pretend its acceptable.

THIS.
As a straight male, it is so frustrating to have the homophobia card thrown at you all the time. Having gay people in some enviroments feels very invasive sometimes, I would even compare it to how girls would feel by having straight guys around in certain ocassions.
Maybe he's just a weird guy who didn't fit in with the chapter for reasons other than being gay?
As a gay fraternity man I can tell you that in my experience, people get denied bids for lots of reasons but being gay isn't one of them. And if he really did get denied a bid just for being gay, but the guys of the fraternity liked him besides that one thing, then why would he want to be friends with them anyways?
Find another fraternity that consists of a better group of guys.

The self-loathe is real, now this is what happens when gays want to be "accepted" by straight people.
Society does too much on poor straight people, poor them, their struggle is unbearable.
As a member of Delta Sigma Theta incorporated I can ensure you that there are many gays who are members of organizations in the Divine 9 especially in Kappa Alpha Psi.
And just because a man is gay that does not make him sexually attracted to all males. There are many intangibles and doctrines in being in a sorority or fraternity and your sexual orientation should not be one of them.
