First listen of 1D’s latest single …and they’ve got a new sound
BIZARRE has had a world exclusive first listen to ONE DIRECTION’s new single Story Of My Life ahead of its first radio play this afternoon.
ZAYN, HARRY, LOUIS, NIALL and LIAM release the song this coming Monday, three years on from appearing on The X Factor.
They have come a long way from the ITV talent show.
Here, my pop-loving reporter TOM THOROGOOD gives his verdict…
There is no doubt that Story Of My Life is the most mature song of One Direction’s relatively short career.
The folk sound should appeal to a more adult audience and is probably closer to what the group really listen to in their spare time than previous tracks they have released. But even though it is a far cry from most recent singles Best Song Ever and What Makes You Beautiful, its catchyness won’t alienate their huge fanbase
Story Of My Life starts stripped-back with Harry singing over an acoustic guitar. Listening to Harry’s rough-round-the-edges voice, it’s easy to see why everyone expects him to have a successful solo career.
Zayn also gets a chance to shine, during a breakdown near the end of the song.
When the beat kicks in it turns into a rousing MUMFORD & SONS-style track.
Like GARY BARLOW on his new one Let Me Go, it mimics the group’s signature rolling guitars and thumping drums.
And although it is based around guitars, it is a world away from 1D’s ballad Little Things.
The band co-wrote Story Of My Life with singer-songwriter JAMIE SCOTT. They will be chuffed with the way it has turned out, and it bodes well for their third album, Midnight Memories. (x)
