Poll: Do you think Exams should have time limits?

I've been wondering this for some time. There's some exams where I think we are given enough time but there are also times that I think we are not given enough time for the exam. I don't think we should as some people could pass the test they just need more time to do the exam as they may feel pressured. What do you think?

I don't think exams should be timed. The reason that they are however is that the professors expect you to know the material. Kind of like the expression "you either know it or you don't" I don't particularly agree with that fully, but I see why it's done.

I wish they didn't, I tend to work slowly and like to double check my work.

But then again, you can't have people taking 6 hours on something that was designed to take 45 minutes or something.

I'm fine with them being timed because when I study adequately I never have any issues finishing the exams and doing well within the allotted time.

Well it depends on what the exams for. If you're doing an English exam then obviously it'll need to be timed because you could continue forever and ever.
Maths exams should not be timed though.

Either you know the content or you don't. Having unlimited time to sit and ponder won't help you if you have not studied.

Of course some exams need more time than they give you.

You MUST have time limits for most math exams though. Any scrub can use guess and check to get the right answer if you give them enough time.

In my exams they always told us, "this test is not timed, however you do not have time to waste,". I think that's a good philosophy to have.

I really think English should not be timed but math should.

Yes. In the real world you're expected to meet deadlines and be able to work under pressure. It's just how it works

They should be timed, but some limits need to be altered sometimes.

Depends on the subject. As KESTER said, one such as math should not be timed unless it's something simplistic that does not require any side work (ex: simple multiplication problems).

Math is the area that needs time limits the most. Though sometimes they need more time than they give.

If you know how to do the problem the problem there is a predictable amount of time that the problem is going to take. As I said before..... students are not entitled to "guess and check" time.

umm yeah without time limits kids can take the whole day on the test.

They should have a time but proctors should accommodate those who need extra time within reason.

Obviously you can't sit around for hours, but there shouldn't be so much pressure to complete something in a restricted time because everyone works at a different pace.

Yes. I think under the time pressure it gives you a boost of motivation. That's what happens with me, anyway.
