In the near future, giant monsters identified as "Kaiju" have risen from a portal in a crevasse beneath the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a war which takes millions of lives and quickly consumes humanity's resources. To combat this new threat, a special type of weapon is designed: massive robots, known as Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. As time passes, even the powerful Jaegers prove almost defenseless in the face of a relentless enemy. On its last stand and on the verge of defeat, the remaining defending forces of mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—and the weapon they are teamed to pilot; a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the early trials of the mechanical titans. Together, man, woman and machine must stand as the human race’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

I liked the idea of melding two people's minds together in order to get the robots to function. I thought the action in the second half was zzzzzzz though. (monsters vs. robots don't do much for me) Idris Elba though. If you care about character development then you'll probably think the depth of the movie is nonexistent but if you think monsters vs. robots sound cool then you may like it. I don't think the movie is going to be a hit imo.

Originally posted by BNF91 i dont think del toro was going for major character depth here.. he wanted to make a completely polished genre film and from the reviews and screening reactions, i think he did. it shouldn't be treated like an oscar film because its not. its going for the big popcorn action (like the fast and furious movies) and total dedication to the mecha/kaiju genres. i can't wait to see it!

It didn't have to be A+ character development but a balance would've made the movie more enjoyable because I was totally on board for the first half but lost interest as soon as the action got repetitive. The best scene in the film deals more with character as opposed to the big battle scenes. (flashback of Mako as a child)
