Joss Whedon isn't extraordinarily clever. He just isn't. I don't know if I despised The Avengers as much as I despised the audience of Marvel and/or Whedon fanboys who were guffawing at every pedestrian gag. The healthy round of applause they offered at the end was even more alarming. I was horrified and a bit embarrassed for everyone involved.
