It's not human nature, really. People are a product of their society, and America, while it certainly has societal issues to improve upon, has drastically progressed in terms of how the populace views differences in race, religion, etc. Even the allowance for gays to get wed in certain States is evidence of that.

Yes, but some countries (first world countries in particular, or anywhere where there is a distinctive cultural melting pot) can forego medieval cultural stigma and progress. Everyone has the ability to change their outlook, there just has to be an effort in the one who puts progression into motion and to the people being encouraged to progress.
