So, I was reading
Clutch at lunch today, and I came across this article wondering whether or not Ri was going to cover
Ebony or
Essence anytime soon, which is a really good question because she’s covered practically every mainstream (read white) media magazine of note in the US, except for
Vanity Fair. So, naturally, the comment section was all abuzz about why she hasn’t covered those magazines. I also think she hasn’t posed for a
VIBE cover as well.
Some of the commenters thought she hadn’t covered
Ebony or
Essence because she was only trying to court white consumers.
Some of the commenters thought that
Ebony and
Essence hadn’t asked Ri to cover their mags because she wasn’t classy enough, but um . . . hello, NeNe!
. . . and um, hello, Kim Porter and Diddy
Now, I know
Essence and
Ebony’s readership skews towards the over 35 crowd, but Beyonce has covered those magazines multiple times, and we all know Rihanna be selling some magazines. So, why wouldn’t Johnson Publishing (
Ebony parent co.) or Time Warner (
Essence parent co.) want the inevitable sales boost?
I guess I’m just having a hard time believing that Rihanna’s absence from those covers is a calculated move on her part because she’s always repped her culture and never shied away from being called black or associated with blackness.
So, what gives?!?
