That's what I was saying. There were singers as good as Whitney, Mariah and Celine as well - but they weren't as POPULAR. As MAINSTREAM. They weren't the default definition of the word "singer" like those three were. Christina became that due to lack of competition.
I was saying that Christina isnt considered a great vocalist because of the lack of competition. Im sure the lack helped her become noticed more, but.. she is considered a great vocalist because people like her voice.
She's had two BBHot100 top 10 singles so far from her latest album. WDKY is one of the most played songs this year, not just in the US, but globally. Her album is well on its way to surpassing platinum status for sales in the US. That's about on par with 4's performance and is way more successful than Bionic. So in what universe is Kelly not listened to enough? Please, just...
You do realize that even a platinum album in the US means about 1/3 of 1% of the population bought it, right? And 4 did okay commercially, but wasn't a huge hit. WDKY this year does not have the omniprecense that songs like Call Me Maybe or Somebody That I Used to Know. It may have been a hit, but its one of many hits, certainly not THE SONG of the moment any time this year. Success does not equal widespread penetration of the public consciousness.

And yes, the average person on the street would say that Adele is more respected as a vocalist than Kelly. I think that's because Adele is more Singer/Songwriter, whereas Kelly's been labeled as a Pop/Rock singer. Kelly's older music was also produced in a way that "compressed" her vocals, which is why people always say she sounds better live. Finally, Adele's tone is more unique, so I think that's why we've been so excited with her recently.
This isn't a live performance, but take away the instrumental of WDKY and you'll see exactly how talented Kelly is vocally.
Talent has zip to do with it. The "vocal trinity" was an accident of timing, where you had three women with BIG voices using them on big power ballads and selling gobs of albums and records. That is why they could be 'crowned' a trinity. Kelly, for all her talent (something I do not deny) has never had the commerical nor critical success, nor the level of public exposure, that any of those women had. She did have a couple of big years, but that did not translate into long term mega-sales, now did it?
There are loads of immensely talented vocalists out there, including women singing in genres that ATRL has no use for. Heck, probably by far the biggest pool of immensely talented, technically brilliant, female vocalists exists in the musical theater and opera - but none of them get proclaimed by the GP, and neither is Kelly. This isn't a slam at Kelly, merely stating what we see out there in the GP.
I think Beyonce is considered a good vocalist to the people who said otherwise. I've heard plenty of people compliment her vocals and bring her up when discussing good vocalists. Pre-I am... Sasha Fierce I don't think she got much respect for her vocals since her hits before then were much more uptempo, but her ballads helped her get more established as a vocalist in my opinion.

Thinking: She has a nice voice, I like her singing, and OMG! Vocal TRINITY! are two totally different things.
There are many female singers than ger complemented for how well they sing. Most of them don't become some sort of yardstick by which other female singers are compared, as Whitney, Mariah, and Celine became in the 90's. The closests now (as in perpetually used as some yardstick) is Adele.

That's the thing the Trinity doesn't exist in the eyes of the GP either. If I were to ask on the street whether or not there is a vocal trinity, they'd probably say no.
People either think you're a great vocalist or not. A lot of people I've known have thought Beyonce was a great vocalist from personal experience. Hence, why I disagree with your comment.

I mean I get your point but some of your reasoning is invalid.
1) About those album sales, I think we all know that unless you are Adele, you aren't going to be shifting a massive amount of albums. If we speak relatively to the other two singers mentioned in this thread (Beyonce and Christina) Stronger is doing just as well as or even better than their last efforts. So if none of these singers have the right amount of success to be recognized for this vocal trinity, who does? Katy? Rihanna? Gaga? We have to strike a balance between talent and commerical success, because we all know that they don't equate in today's music industry. On another note, WDKY is in the top 5 most played songs on the radio for this year so far... It'll likely be 4X platinum in the US by the end of the year. I think you might be underestimating it a little.

this!!
BEY IS GOOD but NO ONE outside of a few message boards considers her as one of the greatest.
She didn't use her upper-chest register.
So, nothing has been proved since I meant she's no where near where she was during AI to early Breakaway's days (vocally). She's a great singer but she has declined. And you as a stan should be aware of that.
But surely you must recognize the same about your fav, no? You can't call us deluded if you fail to grasp what EVERYONE is in agreement with when one says Christina's voice has deteriorated since her debut/peak. While Kelly's voice became very raspy for the MD era and parts of her AIEW era, she came back with her most vocally mature album and now she can easily crush her old hits out of the ball park. Kelly's fluidity with her vocal chords have improved and she is able to sing even better than she used to. Back then, she was a try hard mess. Now, she's a polished veteran. I don't know if Christina can still hit her notes like she used to. These days, Kelly can sing circles around Christina.

What?
I've heard many people say that Beyoncé is one greatest vocalist out today in the general public.
Prime example,I've set in on a few of my younger sister's vocal lessons her vocal coach always cites Beyoncé when she talks about "extraordinary instruments".
People took more notice of Kelly's vocals back on Idol, but because of the pop songs she's become famous for, they sometimes forget how talented she really is.
Kelly and Beyonce are the only two which fit into this category, I'm sorry but Xtina's time has gone. I agree with Ace, luck and lack of competition played a huge part. I think Adele could much easily take her place now even though I don't like her voice that much.

Hey now. I never said Christina didn't have a great voice. She doesn't use it correctly, but the potential is immense.
There really isn't a "vocal trinity" of the current generation. That's why you got people fighting over who actually "qualifies".
However, Beyonce is the best of the names mentioned. The most ease, resonance, connected range, agility, vocal color. And the best vocal musician out of the bunch.

That's still not GP. That's a vocal teacher do duh they would know stuff about singers. It's their profession.
I don't think anybody will deny that she is tops on her generation but people don't rate her as her stans and people in message boards do

Sure I do.
I have never said she's a good vocalist technique-wise. Because, she is not.
All I have been saying since forever is that her voice is a gift. One of the greatest voices ever.
And Kelly is not better vocally than AI and early Breakaway days. Not even close.
